The God of High School streams on Crunchyroll on Monday at 8 AM PST/11 AM EST. It immediately establishes the characters’ rapport and (hopefully) piques viewers’ curiosity for more. On the other hand, this fast, funny introduction works like the cold open to a sitcom. Meanwhile, in the webtoon, these questions are answered right away.Īfter just one episode, I can’t make an assessment on whether it’s a wise choice to present the comic’s story out of order in the anime, but I know that it’s going to shake things up for fans of the webtoon, who recall the story unfolding in a different way. Since it begins in the middle, we aren’t up to speed: we don’t know why any of the characters enter the God of High School tournament, how they qualified, or what they plan to wish for if they win. I can already tell that The God Of High School’s idiot main trio with more muscles than brains between them is going to win fans’ hearts, but this endearing first episode comes at a price. In that way, Park truly does capture the spirit of his favorite manga, Dragon Ball. The relationship between Dan Ahan and Jin Mori became stronger as they decided to become the adopted parents of Taejin Park and raised her. Honestly, it’s better when I don’t think too hard about the specifics (like the eyebrow-raising details about the impossible tech the tournament uses to keep contestants from killing each other.) I’d much prefer to focus on how each character comes into their own through their specialized martial arts style. (It is not lost on me that this South Korean webcomic’s anime adaptation has a Korean director, too.) Since it’s already established that everyone is super strong in order to qualify for this global smackdown, a simple plot that fades into the background is fine for now. His experience gels well with author YongJe Park’s animation background for the first episode’s all-out melee featuring dynamic, fluid motion. This anime is directed by veteran MAPPA director Seong Ho Park who has plenty of experience as an animator for movement-heavy shows like sports anime Yuri!!! on Ice and Mobile Suit Gundam AGE. The real strength of the first episode is the action-the parts with less talking, more fighting. I was not expecting the creative commercial bumpers, which include a pixelated homage to a side-scrolling video game and a visual reference to Cowboy Bebop.
The art style is strong enough that it can riff on itself in visual gags. Jin Mori’s starry eyes and “uwu” mouth are a direct holdover from the comic’s art style. With pink-tinged noses, the anime’s characters look a bit like they have sinus infections. In a plot that loosely can be described as “everybody heads to the first day of the tournament,” we learn that Jin, Han, and Yoo are strong, kind, and not a little bit dumb-all in their own ways.Īs much as the adaptation has altered the story, however, the character design remains true to the comic. Instead of starting at the beginning, the anime kicks right into gear by bringing Jin and his closest allies, Han Daewi and Yoo Mira, together in a comedic altercation that shows off their unique battle abilities while contrasting up their personalities to build character fast. Don't worry, she's just as dumb as the boys.
